SUMMARY:Racial Justice Sunday 2023
DESCRIPTION:22 April 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of the racist killing of Black teenager\, Stephen Lawrence\, in Eltham\, southeast London. In many respects\, Racial Justice Sunday is one of the many legacies of Stephen Lawrence’s life. As such\, in marking RJS\, churches are remembering a young man who in life aspired to be an architect\, but whose legacy has seen him become an architect for justice\, equality\, dignity and unity. \nThis anniversary is a key moment for church and society on these islands. Stephen’s killing was very much Britain’s ‘George Floyd moment’ as it clearly revealed the ugly face of British racism\, in terms not only of the hatred of those who took this young man’s life\, but also of the institutional variety that characterised the appalling investigation into his killing. Akin to all such tragedies\, it is a moment for reflection which will enable us to assess what\, if any\, progress has been made since that tragedy. \nResources\nRacial Justice Sunday resources are produced by CTBI’s sponsoring churches. The resource for 2023 will provide readers with opportunities to pray and take action on racial justice-related matters. \nThe first part of the resource includes excellent liturgical and creative prayers prepared by Phill Melstrom\, the Worship Development Worker at the Church of Scotland. This material provides multifarious entry points for any engagement with the subject matter. Equally\, we have outstanding worship-related material written by Mark Sturge\, a prime mover with Black Majority Churches that will resonate especially with those from Pentecostal congregations. Both items capture the richness and diversity of devotions and worship in our churches. \nThe second part of the resource includes a variety of reflections from Christians who were around at the time of Stephen Lawrence’s killing. It also features contributions from younger racial justice champions who reflect on what Stephen’s murder means to them as Christians living in a world that is still grappling with racial justice. \nRichard Reddie\, Director of Justice and Inclusion\, CTBI

SUMMARY:The Future of Youth Work
DESCRIPTION:How can we get more people doing youth ministry? \nWith the numbers of people training for youth ministry halving over the past 10 years\, yet the needs of young people growing\, we are facing a great challenge. Now some may argue that the role for the volunteer is greater\, however research that SWYM just came out with shows that where there is a youth minister more mission and more discipleship happens. \nSo we are inviting a group of leaders to gather on 9 February 2023 at the XLP building in London for a discussion and lunch around this issue. How can we inspire\, mobilise and train more youth ministers across the church in the UK? \nBackground – Equipping the Church to Reach the Next Generation\nThe Need for More Youth Workers\nScripture Union reports that 95% of under-18 year olds do not go to church. Church-based youth workers are critical to bringing and embedding the next generation of young people into the church. \nMoreover\, the Evangelical Alliance reported that 72% of Christians come to faith before they are 20\, and many parents and carers rely heavily on youth workers\, youth groups and Christian camps to both introduce their children to faith and disciple them\, helping them to navigate the hurdles of teenage life. \nMore broadly\, young people are facing a mental health pandemic like never before (an increase of 134% mental health referrals in 2021)\, and good youth work is known to improve engagement with school and education\, improving social skills and safety\, whilst reducing crime and anti-social behaviour. \nIn the last decade\, the number of people going into youth work has halved and a significant number of youth work training providers have shut down (Christian and otherwise). Youth work seems to have become a less attractive career path\, particularly post-pandemic\, and appears less highly valued by the Church and society than other forms of ministry (Church-based or secular). Many good youth workers are leaving the ministry\, often through feeling called to Church leadership or due to lack of career progression or poor pay (or both). \nThe Solution – growing numbers of youth workers through:\n\nIncreased recognition from within the church\n\nBetter pay for youth workers and a similar sense of value (often reflected in pay and housing provision) as church leaders.\n\n\nVision-casting\n\nChurch leaders and others inspiring young people and helping them to find a sense of calling to enter the profession.\nSupport to help sharpen the church’s vision for youth ministry.\nDeveloping a model of ministry that reaches young people where they are at and equips them to reach their friends.\n\n\nIntentional recruitment of youth workers\n\nSupporting the identification and commissioning of dynamic youth leaders from within churches\, both the obvious and those on the fringe waiting for the challenge.\nInvestment from church leaders in those who display a sense of calling to youth work.\n\n\nTraining\n\nSupport from experienced youth workers in charity contexts in how to lead youth ministries.\nDevelopment of a specific training scheme\n\nWithin the Church of England and St Mellitus\, there has been an intentional drive through the Peter stream and Caleb stream to bring in different demographics into ministry. Developing a third stream (the Eutychus stream?) to recruit youth workers would require similar resolve\, resource and centrality to the church’s recruitment. A similar model could be replicated across other denominations.\n\n\n\n\n\nWorking group\nThe people who are involved in the working group are: \n\nLuke Watson\, CEO XLP.\nBejoy Pal\, CEO Ascension Trust.\nKyle McKinnon\, Director Reign Ministries.\nGareth Jones\, Field Director London City Mission.\nLes Isaac OBE\, President Ascension Trust.\nBernard Hibbs\, Director Church Communities UK.\nJoe Lowther\, CEO KICK

SUMMARY:Serious Violence Digital Conference
DESCRIPTION:Event summary\nThe Government has recently committed to build on its programme to prevent and reduce serious violence and strengthen its response to this crime. \nThe Serious Violence Duty has been introduced as part of the Police\, Crime\, Sentencing and Courts Act 2022\, alongside Serious Violence Reduction Orders (SVROs) and Offensive Weapon Homicide Reviews. SUMMARY:County Lines Conference
DESCRIPTION:County Lines continues to be a high-profile and UK-wide issue\, with far-reaching and devastating impacts. County Lines drug smuggling is being tackled on multiple fronts: prevention and early identification; intervention and safeguarding victims; the disruption of lines and transport routes; and via major initiatives\, like the Met’s recent Orochi Operation. \nHowever\, County Lines is a moving feast\, as perpetrators adapt to increased enforcement measures. Concerns are increasing around the use of social media by county lines gangs\, the high numbers of hard-to-reach children who absent from education and the growth in poverty in the UK. \nWestminster Insight’s established and successful bi-annual County Lines Conference supports this evolving picture\, bringing to you the most innovative initiatives\, successful collaborations\, and impactful multi-agency partnerships to help tackle County Lines. It will spotlight how county lines gangs work and who they prey upon. Learn about effective police and intelligence-led solutions\, and how to tackle the changing operating models used by organised crime groups. \nLearn from lived experience about what leads someone into a county lines gang. How do they exit that world? How is their future going to be a successful one? \nSupporting women and girls is also becoming more critical: the number of women and girls involved is underestimated and growing. You will hear specific advice for how you can intervene early\, and support females caught up in county lines.

SUMMARY:The 2nd Annual Working Together To Safeguard Children & Young People Conference
DESCRIPTION:In the UK there are 650\,000 children reportedly living in “high risk” environments\, with the number of children facing immediate safeguarding needs rising by 4% between 2017 and 2018. \nIndeed\, the recommendations of the Wood Review have placed a greater duty on organisations charged with safeguarding responsibilities to modernise and coordinate their efforts. Up and down the country\, previously crowded local safeguarding children boards are being replaced with streamlined safeguarding partnerships\, allowing organisations to coordinate their response more effectively. This on-line conference highlights the key issues that safeguarding professionals are facing and presents strategies and solutions for delivering service improvement.
